- Onder leiding van Major Schiche (Kdr Pi.Btl.269) was een voorhoede van 269.ID bestaande uit pioniers van 3./PiBtl.269 en twee met zes sukken PAK versterkte compagnieën (1./IR.490 en 10./IR.490) direct na het invasie-uur richting Maas opgetrokken. Hun doel was om de weg vrij te maken van obstakels en Nederlandse voorverdedigingsposten. De pioniers stonden onder bevel van de Oberleutnant Ely. Deze maakte zich zeer verdienstelijk tijdens dit werk, maar werd bij een Friese Ruiterversperring te Reijmerstok (tussen Gulpen en Banholt) gedood door een voorpost van 5.Res.G.C.
- Betrokkene werd vermoedelijk postuum tot Oberleutnant bevorderd (naast een EK.II onderscheiding). Duitse bronnen refereren stelselmatig naar hem als Leutnant.
- Under the command of Major Schiche (Kdr of Pi.Btl.269) a forward formation comprising pioneers of 3./Pi.Btl.269, 1./ and 10./IR.490 and a company of PAK of Pz.Jg.Abt.269 headed the 269.ID with the general purpose of clearing the road ahead of Dutch foreposts and obstructions. The pioneers were commanded by Oberleutnant Ely, who distinguished himself during this operation. At a hamlet called Reijmerstok (halfway between the villages Gulpen and Banholt) he was killed whilst clearing the road of obstructions, when the pioneers were shot at by a Dutch forepost of 5.Res.G.C. border infantry.
- Subjetc officer was probably posthumously promoted to Oberleutnant (next to his EK.II decoration). German sources about this episode refer to him as 'Leutnant'.
